2017 Subaru WRX update revealed in the USA

Updated versions of the Subaru WRX and Subaru WRX STI have been launched in the USA with a sportier front-end design, and numerous improvements under the skin.

The revised WRX and WRX STI both feature a new front bumper with more aggressive and sculpted air intakes, and a revised grille.

While the 199kW 2.0-liter direct-injection turbo engine in the regular WRX, and the 227kW 2.5-litre turbo mill in WRX STI are unchanged, Subaru has endowed both models with retuned suspension setup that's said to improve steering stability and ride comfort.

The WRX also gains an electric power steering system that's been revised for a "more natural feel", and an "enhanced shifter feel" for the six-speed manual.

Top-end versions, at least in the States, also add 18-inch alloy wheels, Recaro seats with eight-way power adjustment, red brake callipers, and upgraded Jurid brake pads.

The STI benefits from new 19-inch alloy wheels with 245/35 tyres, and an upgraded Driver Controlled Centre Differential all-wheel drive system, which ditches the mechanical and electronic control mechanism for the central limited-slip differential in favour of an all-electronic setup.

There's also a better Brembo brake package with new brake pads, yellow callipers, larger drilled discs all around, stronger mono-block six-piston callipers up front, and mono-block two-piston callipers at the rear.

On the inside, both the WRX and WRX STI gain revised trim and materials, redesigned door grips, thicker door glass, new door seals, a foam-filled windscreen header beam, faster boot opener, and a rear seat arm rest with cupholders.

There's also a larger 5.9-inch multi-function display in the centre of the instrumentation cluster, and top-end models now have a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system rather the current car's 6.2-inch unit.

Safety on both models has been improved via an updated front-end structure, available adaptive LED headlights, an updated vehicle hold feature that works on all types of road types, and EyeSight warning lights in the windscreen.
