2018 Audi Q3 to go bigger, more premium, with PHEV and EV options – report

The next-generation Audi Q3 is expected to arrive sometime during 2018, and could even offer an all-electric variant that will share underpinnings with the Volkswagen e-Golf – according to a new report out of the UK.

In a new article by AutoExpress, the new Q3 is expected to be lighter, more practical and, most importantly, more upmarket than the ageing current model that was first revealed in 2011.

Underneath, the next-generation SUV will share its MQB platform with the A3 and Volkswagen Tiguan.

With these new underpinnings, the Q3 will shed weight, be more spacious inside and offer the potential for plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology, even an all-electric (EV) version.

Should it make it to production, the Q3 EV would share components with the soon-to-be updated Volkswagen e-Golf, which, although not yet revealed, claims a driving range of around 300km on a single charge.

AutoExpress says the new model is likely to remain similar in size to the current model, though marginal gains in most dimensions will help to make the Q3 more practical and more comfortable for rear seat passengers.

Inside, the Q3 is expected to get a major overhaul, with the current model's cluttered centre console design to be replaced with a simplified layout similar to that of Audi's latest models – including the A3, A4, Q5 and Q7.

Additionally, expect the availability of Audi's 'Virtual Cockpit' digital driver's display and the company's latest MMI infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

This latest report comes after Anna Burgdorf, general manager for corporate communications for Audi Australia, told CarAdvice at the local preview of the new Q2 SUV last September that an electrified version of each model line would be offered in the near future.

With the next-gen Audi Q3 expected in European showrooms next year, it's likely the new SUV will be revealed before the end of this year, so stay tuned to CarAdvice for more updates in the coming months.
