That could be good news for those that liked the look of the Inspiration, and while Infiniti has not revealed if we'll see any further changes before production begins, it is clear that the new QX50 will continue the swooping design themes of the brand's latest models.
The company itself does not seem completely committed to the look we see here, though, with Infiniti president Roland Krueger describing the design as more of a potential pathway.
“With the unveiling of the QX Sport Inspiration at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show, we showed the future of Infiniti QX models. The new QX50 Concept evolves this concept further and shows how Infiniti could develop its future presence in the fastest-growing vehicle segment globally," Krueger said.
These new images reveal a taller, less tapered and more practical roofline than that of the Inspiration concept (shown here in dark silver).
Another standout detail change is to the front guards and doors, where the Inspiration's tall fender gill and lower air channels have been replaced by softer folds and curves. The sharp character line through the door tops and wheel arches remains prominent, however.
The tall front intakes at the front of the Inspiration are seen again on the QX50 concept, while silver skid plates now also feature at the front and rear - the latter also revealing a less dramatic exhaust design.
The inventive wing-like design of the LED headlight internals at both ends has carried over with only minor changes, but it remains to be seen if these will make the leap to production.
Don't expect the final production car to remain as free of door handles as this concept, either.
Infiniti says the QX50 concept will also preview its autonomous driving technologies, although, as a show car, the company is unlikely to be offering any real-world demonstrations at this stage.
A final production schedule for the new QX50 is still to be confirmed, but with the current body now remarkably coming into its 10th year - after first debuting as the 'EX' in 2007 - a market launch for the new generation can't be far away.
The current model was never offered in Australia, but with the company now focused on global expansion, this new generation is likely to be a shoo-in for our market.
