2018 BMW X7 spied

Although we can see the overall shape and size of the X7, we can't make out too many of its finer styling details as BMW has fitted false body panels to the fenders, doors and bonnet of this prototype. We can see, though, that the new SUV will feature a set of tall kidney grilles.

When it goes on sale, the X7 will be pitched into battle against the Mercedes-Benz GLS and Range Rover, amongst others.

Under the skin, the X7 uses a version of the Cluster Architecture (CLAR) that underpins the latest 7 Series, the new 5 Series, and the upcoming 3 Series.

The X7 will become the brand's flagship SUV, with pricing and sizing to match. Compared to the next-generation X5, the X7 will have a longer wheelbase and longer rear overhangs.

This will mean that, unlike the X5 and X6, the X7 will feature three rows of seating and a maximum of capacity of seven people.

Under the bonnet, the X7 will likely be powered by a selection of turbocharged six- and eight-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. A plug-in hybrid variant will also be featured as part of the drivetrain mix.

The BMW X7 will be built alongside other X models, including the X3, X4, X5, and X6, at BMW's plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Although the company confirmed plans for the X7 way back in 2014, production and sales, at least in North America and Europe, aren't said to begin until 2018.
