The Japanese manufacturer reports that the plastic fuel pump retaining rings on the fuel tanks could deteriorate due to heat exposure from the engine and exhaust pipes.
In addition to the heat deterioration, the gasket, or seal rubber, may apply reaction force to the fuel pump rings, which could cause cracks to develop.
Should the fuel pump rings crack, the vehicle could leak fuel.
Affected RX-8 models were sold from 10 July 2003 through 31 March 2009.
The VIN list for the recalled vehicles can be viewed here.
Owners of the affected RX-8s will be contacted by Mazda Australia via mail once replacement parts become available, and will be advised to present their vehicle to their local dealer to have the fuel pump retainer rings replaced and thermal insulation pads installed.
