2018 Renault Megane RS mule spied with flares

A development mule that we believe is the next Renault Megane RS has been spied at a pretrol station in Sweden accompanied by a Golf R hatchback.

The vehicle seen here uses the body shell of the new Renault Megane GT hatch, but has a few clear signs of its sporting intent. Unlike an earlier development vehicle spotted in July, this latest car has boasts temporary wheel arch extensions.

As before, the engineers have removed a section from the middle of the car's rear diffuser-style element to accommodate two exhaust tips. This mule is also fitted with larger front discs that are paired with Brembo brake callipers.

Unlike the outgoing Megane RS, which was available exclusively in three-door form, the new RS will use the five-door hatch as its starting point as there is no three-door Megane this time around.

Although we don't know for certain what is lurking underneath the prototype's bonnet, reports from Europe suggest that its four-cylinder turbo will now boast at least 225kW of power.

The rumour mill also indicates that the new Megane RS will be offered with both a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a six-speed manual.

No-one's quite certain whether the new car will adopt all-wheel drive, or stick with front-wheel drive, possibly with the addition of four-wheel steering.
