Fiat Chrysler chooses CES over Detroit for techy new debut – report

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) will stage a big unveiling at next month's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, a new report suggests, instead of the following week's Detroit motor show - the biggest motor show on America's calendar.

The US's Detroit Free Press reports that for the first time in seven years, the FCA Group will not reveal a new car or truck at America's largest auto show, likely due to the next-generation Jeep Wrangler and Dodge Ram 1500 not being ready in time.

Rod Alberts, executive director of NAIAS, told the publication that it's just a case of product cycles that don't line up with the event.

"As with any international auto show, sometimes product cycle launches do not coincide with show dates," he said.

This sentiment was echoed by Stephanie Brinley, senior analyst at IHS Automotive.

"Not having a car in Detroit is much more about FCA's product development life cycles than anything else," she said. "I am certain it's not a decision that was taken lightly."

Given the technology and gadgetry focus of the Consumer Electronics Show, and the fact it has become a focus point for car makers revealing new infotainment and lifestyle systems, it is likely that FCA's big debut will be along those lines.

The report speculates that one of the vehicles FCA plans to reveal at CES 2017 is an autonomous version of the Chrysler Pacifica people mover (the new version of the model once sold here as the Grand Voyager), which is being co-developed with technology giant Google.

In May, FCA and Google announced their collaboration on a self-driving version of the hybrid Pacifica, with an initial production run of 100 units for research and development.

Despite FCA choosing to not do a big reveal in Detroit, several other brands including General Motors (GM), Ford, BMW, Honda, Lexus, Nissan and Toyota.

FCA, however, will still operate a display stand for its numerous brands, which include well-known marques like Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Ram, along with Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Maserati.
