Weekend Deals on Wheels for December 10:: Workhorse edition

It’s time for the latest instalment of Deals on Wheels, which this week looks at six factory-backed special offers for all you weekend shoppers.

This isn’t a promotional campaign, just us trying to offer you some interesting suggestions if you’re in the market for some new wheels. Here we focus on workhorses.

Ford Ranger XLT - $55,990

The top-selling Ford Ranger XLT is the ute of the moment, and Ford is advertising MY17 updated versions for $55,990 drive-away, essentially covering all on-road costs for about $500, and thereby saving you a few grand before you start haggling.

The XLT gets luxuries such as a 8.0-inch touchscreen, SYNC3 infotainment wth Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, reversing camera and sensors, sat-nav, cruise control, dual-zone climate control and 17-inch alloys.

The 3.2-litre turbo-diesel engine has a 3500kg towing capacity, and at this price gets the six-speed manual gearbox (you can get an auto for a few brand more), five-star ANCAP rating, locking rear diff and 800mm wading ability.

Additionally, Ford is throwing in an extended five-year/100,000km warranty, and $500 worth of servicing discounts. Not bad.

Mitsubishi Triton GLX+ 4WD - $35,990 plus $2000 factory bonus

Want a no-frills 4×4 dual-cab that’ll just do the job, at the other end of the spectrum from the expensive Ranger? That’s where the Triton excels. It’s no looker, but it’ll serve you well. CarAdvice even owns one on its growing private fleet.

It remains a bit of a steal at $35,990 drive-away, plus you'll get a further $2000 factory bonus at deal time. It comes with a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel, six-speed manual gearbox and 3100kg towing capacity, plus seven airbags and a trailer stability assist system. You also get a reverse camera.

Incidentally, you can opt up to the GLS 4×4 version for another $3500. A bloody steal, as always.

Volkswagen Amarok 4x2 dual-cab - $29,990

The base 4x2 dual cab Amarok TDI340 is a bargain at $29,990 drive-away, because this campaign deal sits against a RRP (before on-roads) of $32,990.

This base Argentinian-made model gets a 103kW/340Nm single-turbo 2.0-litre diesel engine with a six-speed manual gearbox, and rear-wheel-drive.

It's basic, but you get a 1168kg payload, the widest tray in class, Bluetooth connectivity and a leather steering wheel with buttons. Moreover, if you get Volkswagen's in-house finance, you'll get an extended five-year warranty with unlimited kilometres. But, you should always shop around for loans first.

Isuzu D-Max 4x2 cab-chassis - $25,990

As you can read here, Isuzu Ute owes much of its growing sales to a focus on the work-ready 4x2 D-Max models, often number three in segment sales behind the HiLux and Ranger (and there or thereabouts with the similarly strong Mazda BT-50).

This is what Isuzu does well: tough, durable and rugged workhorses. Given the RRP is $27,500, this regular campaign deal of $25,990 drive-away is good. The D-Max is $2000 cheaper than a HiLux diesel and has a bigger engine, though the Toyota counters with touchscreen infotainment.

The base D-Max gets a very strong 130kW/380Nm 3.0-litre diesel engine, manual gearbox, six airbags, Bluetooth, cruise control, electric windows and a long 2550mm alloy dropside tray.

Note, the more expensive SX high-ride model is pictured. The car mentioned here sits slightly lower.

Renault Trafic SWB - $32,990

The Renault Trafic is a ripping van, with fantastic driving dynamics and a comfortable cabin. Renault is also Europe's biggest-selling commercial brand, so it's no beginner.

The deal that grabs us is for ABN holders, and features the entry single-turbo van. Its 66kW/260Nm is nothing flash, but it's tractable enough, and the six-speed manual gearbox has a nice shift action.

The base Trafic offers reverse sensors, front/side/curtain airbags, a 2.5-metre loading length, 5.3 cubic-metres of cargo space, a 1.2-tonne payload, plus Renault's excellent five-year/200,000km warranty with long 12-month/30,000km service intervals with your first few visits set at $349 each (current prices).

At $32,990 drive-away in any colour, it's decent buying. Meantime, the more powerful twin-turbo version with a bulkhead and more niceties costs $39,990 with ABN.

Nissan Y61 Patrol ST - $49,990

Ok, the Y61 Patrol isn't technically a commercial vehicle, but it ain't made for urban duties. As you can read here, this icon has now been discontinued, but Nissan has stock on grass and needs to clear it.

You can therefore get a new ST for $49,990 drive-away, saving you more than $10,000 over the regular RRP (plus on-roads). It's a dinosaur, but a cheap one.

It comes with a 118kW/380Nm turbo-diesel engine, 3.2-tonne towing with the manual gearbox, seven seats, iPod/USB and 17-inch alloy wheels. Old school charm.
