Mercedes-AMG GT R joins elite club with hot Nurburgring lap – video

The hardcore Mercedes-AMG GT R has joined the supercar elite this week, lapping the famed Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit in 7 minutes and 10 seconds.

In a video released by Sport Auto, the bright green GT R is seen flinging through the challenging race track, driven by Christian Gebhardt.

Powered by an uprated version of the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 in the AMG GT S, the GT R produces 430kW of power and 700Nm of torque.

All that grunt is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

0-100km/h takes just 3.6 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 318km/h.

Helping the GT R achieve its impressive lap time is the more aggressive aero kit, inspired by the AMG GT3 race car, along with four-wheel steering and an active aerodynamics system concealed in the underbody in front of the engine.

With a time of 7:10, the GT R is quicker than established supercars like the Dodge Viper ACR (7:12), Ferrari 488 GTB (7:21) and the Lexus LFA Nurburgring Pack (7:14).

Meanwhile, only a select few vehicles are quicker than the Mercedes around the 'Green Hell', including the Porsche 918 Spyder (6:57), Lamborghini Aventador SV (6:59) and the Nissan GT-R Nismo (7:08) - with each of those three driving all-four wheels as opposed to the Mercedes-AMG's rear two.
