New compact Toyota to debut in New Delhi

Toyota has today announced that it will unveil a new compact concept vehicle at the New Delhi Auto Expo in January.

Toyota’s production and sales subsidiary in India – Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private, Ltd. (TKM) – is taking an aggressive approach to the booming industry, confirming that another 13 concept and production vehicles will join the new baby at the show.

Among those are redesigned models of the Prado and Fortuner SUVs and the Innova minivan, as well as concepts like the i-REAL personal mobility vehicle and the Fine-S fuel-cell hybrid.

TKM plans to start production of the new compact car in December 2010 at its soon-to-be-completed second plant in Bangalore, with manufacturing possibly expanding to Brazil by 2011.

The car, codenamed EFC for Entry Family Car, is expected to cost significantly less than $10,000 and will be targeted at the Indian market as well as Russia and parts of Latin America.

It is believed both a sedan and hatch version will be on show from January 5 in New Delhi and that up to 70,000 units may be produced in the first year.

Toyota will also display the Prius at the expo with ambitions to launch the car in India’s domestic market.

India’s new car sales of 133,687 in November pushed growth up to 61 percent over 2008 representing the biggest surge since February 2004.
