Volkswagen Tiguan beats its sales record, pre-orders for hotted-up 162TSI soar

The Volkswagen Tiguan achieved its best-ever Australian sales month in November, reflecting the continued medium SUV boom.

According to VFACTS figures released this week, 1170 Tiguans found homes last month, beating the existing record of 1107 set in March 2011. This put the combined Tiguan range ahead of the Subaru Forester.

Of this number, 1028 were the bigger and more expensive new-generation version launched a few months ago, while 150 units were old stock of the previous car, which is now all-but-gone.

The figure for the new model gave it 7.6 per cent market share, though it trailed the Mazda CX-5 (Australia’s best-selling SUV with 1956), Nissan X-Trail (1938), Hyundai Tucson (1934), Toyota RAV4 (1593) and Mitsubishi Outlander (1205).

The sales result was even more welcome for Volkswagen considering the range-hero doesn’t launch until next month. This is the $48,490 (plus on-road costs) Tiguan 162TSI, which uses the Golf GTI’s turbo engine, and with a standard DSG and 4Motion AWD, matches its 6.5 second 0-100km/h sprint time.

VW Australia claims that demand for this hot hatch on stilts is suitably “fervent”. Of the 5439 Tiguan configurations 'built' on the company's website last week, 1434 were the 162TSI.

This doesn’t necessarily equate to orders, though almost half of the 1055 examples of the 162TSI on order have been pre-sold, most being fitted with the $4000 R-Line styling kit.

“Aside from its performance credentials, the 162TSI is unique,” Volkswagen Australia managing director Michael Bartsch claims.

“It is a genuinely premium SUV priced well below the luxury car tax threshold. Rival brands can’t put a glove on it. Prestige brands have reason to dread it.”

Bold. We look forward to getting one for review. In the meantime, read our Tiguan comparison tests here.

The booming medium SUV market — now the segment biggest segment by sales behind small cars — will get ever more competitive in 2017, with a new-generation Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V arriving, and the rebadged Ford Escape replacing the slow-selling Kuga.
