Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger top November sales charts, ahead of Corolla

In a strong reflection of buyer trends, a pair of light commercial vehicles topped the sales charts in November.

The Toyota HiLux (3839 units) was the nation’s favourite new vehicle, ahead of its Ford Ranger arch-nemesis (3410). Third was the Toyota Corolla small car on 3245.

It lends further ammunition to the argument that the HiLux versus Ranger rivalry is now the most consumer-relevant in the Australian market.

The HiLux is also Australia’s top-selling vehicle so far this year, with 38,018 units being registered. The Ranger, meanwhile, is number four year-to-date on 33,587, behind the Corolla (37,403) and Hyundai i30 (34,937) but ahead of the Mazda 3 (32,966).

For some context, this means that sales of the HiLux on their own exceed the total annual sales so far (with one month in the year to go) of Honda and Mercedes-Benz. The Ranger’s sales alone are ahead of BMW’s overall total by some distance.

Considering the majority of HiLux and Ranger models sold are 4x4 dual cabs with an average transaction price north of $50,000 (the Ranger XLT and Wildtrak are well above this) these figures are fairly remarkable.

Specifically, the industry market share of 4x4 dual cabs is well over three-times greater than the budget 4x2 market, measuring 12.4 per cent and 3.8 per cent respectively.

It’s also where the Ranger is strongest, given these all-paw versions of the Ford (28,009) have sold in greater numbers than the Toyota (27,851). The Ranger’s market growth of 32.6 per cent is almost double that of the Toyota’s too, though both are up more than the segment average.

So big is the 4x4 ute market that its market share sits behind only small cars and medium SUVs in the overall sales race, with 133,591 units.

Further down in the ute race are the Mitsubishi Triton (19,791), Holden Colorado (17,173), Nissan Navara (15,769), Isuzu D-Max (14,483), Mazda BT-50 (13,410), Volkswagen Amarok (7669), Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series (6383) and Foton Tunland (798).
