2017 Ford Fiesta revealed

The 2017 Ford Fiesta range has been revealed in Europe, with four versions of the Blue Oval brand's light hatch unveiled at an event in Cologne, Germany.

While the four cars you see above may not be entirely indicative of what we'll see in Australia - Ford has confirmed this model revealed at the Go Further event is aimed specifically at the European, Middle East and African markets - there are clearly a few interesting developments.

The four-model Fiesta line-up shown at the event includes a new Active crossover model with body cladding and roof rails, a sporty-looking ST-Line model (which isn't as hot as the yet-to-be-revealed ST hot-hatch replacement), a luxury-focused three-door Vignale model, and a high-spec, smooth looking Titanium version.

The design of the new-generation Fiesta may not be a massive leap, but it does look a little more contemporary and softer than its angular, current-generation predecessor.

The headlights are more rounded, the grille is similar to that seen on the updated Focus, and the body features less prominent creases, particularly around the bumpers.

At the rear - there haven't been any official backside shots of the five-door released just yet - there's a new horizontal tail-light setup that certainly looks more modern than the vertical rear lights of the current model. Here's a pair of pictures so you get what we're on about:

It appears as though the new model will be slightly longer and lower than its predecessor, and that the rear hatch will feature a marginally larger opening. Official measurements are yet to be revealed, but if it's longer, we'd expect it to offer better interior space.

Speaking of the cabin, the new-look Fiesta's cockpit has seen a massive upgrade over the current button-cluster mess.

There's a high-set tablet-like screen with Ford Sync 3 media connectivity, as well as - in some models, and maybe not in all markets - a Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Expect the latest connectivity as a result, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard in all Sync 3-equipped cars. Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, sat-nav, and voice control media may also be standard.

Full details on what to expect under the bonnet of the new-generation Fiesta are still to be revealed, too, but it seems highly likely that there will be a more mainstream rollout of the award winning 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine that is currently reserved only for the Fiesta Sport model in Australia.

That engine, according to Ford, will become even more efficient (its current claimed fuel use is 4.9L/100km) due to a new cylinder deactivation system for the EcoBoost engine, the first of its kind for a three-pot engine that can allow it to run on two cylinders only.

Currently the Fiesta Ambiente base model and slightly higher Trend versions are powered by a 1.5-litre non-turbo four-cylinder. It's still unclear what we can expect locally.

Australia

CarAdvice contacted Ford Australia to try and glean some extra info as to what local buyers can expect from the new-generation Fiesta. Damion Smy, product communications manager for Ford Australia, indicated that the model we've seen revealed at the Go Further event may not be representative of any new-generation Fiesta sold here.

"Today we’re introducing next-generation Fiesta for Europe and Middle East and Africa. Customer demand for small vehicles continues to grow globally, and Fiesta is an important part of our portfolio. We’re talking about the new Fiesta for Europe and MEA today. We’ll have more to say about other markets at a later date," Smy said.

"Our Fiesta will continue to be sourced from Rayong, Thailand. This vehicle announced in Europe today will be is built in Cologne, Germany. We produce Fiesta in Valencia (CKD) and Cuautitlàn (Mexico), Cologne, (Germany), Sao Bernado, (Brazil), Chelny (Russia) and, Hanoi (CKD) (Vietnam)," he said.

Smy couldn't add any more on what specifications we will see locally, either, but it seems highly unlikely that the Vignale model will be offered here. The ST-Line version seems a good chance to replace the current Fiesta Sport, however.

"Fiesta is part of our line-up, and Fiesta will continue to be part of our line-up. We'll continue to source ours from Thailand for the foreseeable future," Smy said.

We'll have to wait and see if the version of the Fiesta that we will see here will be much different to the European/Middle East/African version revealed overnight.

It is possible that the new Ford Fiesta will be on sale here in 2017, but it could take a little longer than that... Stay tuned.
