Porsche hopes to sell 20,000 Mission E sedans each year – report

The CEO of German sports car maker Porsche has come out saying the company hopes to sell 20,000 examples of its upcoming Mission E sedan each year when it launches at the end of the decade, according to a new report.

Speaking to German newspaper Automobilwoche (translated by AutoblogPorsche boss Oliver Blume told the publication about the company's ambitious target.

"We have the Mission E calculated with a number of items in the order for about 20,000," he said.

Automobilwoche is quick to highlight that Porsche sold 31,350 examples of its iconic 911 sports car in 2015, suggesting this target could be a long shot.

The Porsche Mission E concept was first shown at last year's Frankfurt motor show, and previews an all-electric sedan that is scheduled to go into production before 2020.

Powering the show car are two permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) that the company claims are similar to those used in the 919 Hybrid Le Mans race car.

With a combined output of over 440kW, Porsche says the Mission E can sprint from 0-100km/h in under 3.5 seconds - making it a clear performance rival to higher-spec versions of the Tesla Model S.

Other figures include a driving range of over 500km, along with the ability to charge the Mission E's battery pack to 80 per cent in just 15 minutes using an 800V connection.

It's unknown whether the production version of the Mission E will be an all-electric version of the Panamera sedan or a completely new model. We'll just have to wait and see.

Meanwhile, Automobilwoche also reports that the head of development at Porsche is considering a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the 718 Boxster (interestingly, no Cayman PHEV is mentioned), which would join the existing plug-in models in the company's line-up - Cayenne S E-Hybrid and Panamera 4 E-Hybrid.

An electric 911 is also said to be in the works, but is at least a decade off.
