Subaru Forester, Impreza added to Takata airbag recall:: 34,500 vehicles affected

Subaru has issued a recall for 34,563 of its 2008 to 2009 model-year Impreza small cars and 2009 model-year Forester SUVs as part of the ongoing Takata airbag campaign.

In this latest notice, affected models are fitted with front passenger airbag inflators that could shoot metal fragments into the cabin when deployed, posing a significant risk of injury, even death, to occupants.

The number of recalled vehicles by model line and year are as follows:

Forester - 15,944 vehicles (2009)
Impreza - 18,619 vehicles (2008-2009)

The Takata airbag scandal has affected around 60 million vehicles globally, across a range of manufacturers including Toyota, Subaru, Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari.

In July, Subaru recalled nearly 76,000 vehicles from its Liberty, Outback and Tribeca lines built between 2004 and 2009 for the issue, adding to the notice for 33,548 2004-2007 Imprezas issued last year.

This latest notice brings the company's Takata recall count in Australia to around 144,000 units.

Known owners will be contacted by Subaru Australia via mail as soon as parts are available. Customers are encouraged to present their vehicle to their preferred Subaru dealership for replacement of the front passenger airbag free of charge.
