2018 Mitsubishi ASX spied inside and out

The next-generation Mitsubishi ASX has been spied again, this time on public roads in Europe.

For the first time, the spy photographers were able to capture the images of the new crossover's interior.

This prototype, as well as one spotted back in August, show that styling for the new SUV will be based on the XR-PHEV concept. While the basic styling details will be similar between the two vehicles, the production ASX will lose the concept's frameless windows, clean surfaces, and fast roof line.

If the new ASX sticks to the XR-PHEV's dimensions, the next-generation crossover will be larger than today's car. Measuring 4370mm long and 1870mm wide, the XR-PHEV is in the same size class as the Nissan Qashqai.

Under the bonnet, the ASX may feature a plug-in hybrid drivetrain similar to the XR-PHEV's, but the vast majority of sales will come from more conventional petrol and diesel drivetrains.

With Mitsubishi Motor's reeling after it was exposed doctoring its domestic market fuel economy figures as far back as 1991, Nissan now holds a controlling 33 per cent stake in Mitsubishi Motors.

In future, all export-oriented Mitsubishi models will likely be based on platforms shared with the Renault-Nissan Alliance, meaning that the next-generation ASX may be one of the last Mitsubishi models to developed fully in-house.
