2017 Opel Grandland X rendered:: Upcoming small SUV imagined

Independent, speculative renderings for the recently-confirmed Opel Grandland X SUV have surfaced online, giving us a glimpse of what the company's medium SUV might look like when it launches in Europe sometime next year.

Created by Dutch artist Remco Meulendijk, the renderings depict a handsome crossover, resembling several models in the company's line-up including the Astra and smaller Mokka X.

The Grandland X will compete in the European 'C' segment, which means it will take on the likes of the Mazda CX-5, Volkswagen Tiguan and Hyundai Tucson. The smaller Qashqai has also been reported a rival, which could suggest the Grandland X will be sized between the small and medium segments.

One of 29 new models to be launched from 2016 to 2020, the Grandland X will sit above the recently-facelifted Mokka X and the upcoming Opel Crossland X - believed to be the next-generation Opel Meriva that has been spied testing in recent months.

Reports out of Europe suggest the Grandland X and Crossland X will be developed in cooperation with Peugeot-Citroen (PSA), which could mean the larger of the two models could share numerous components with the new Peugeot 3008 that will launch in Australia early next year.

Meanwhile, the Meriva/Crossland X is understood to be a close relative of the next-generation Peugeot 2008 and Citroen C3 Picasso, which will morph from MPVs to SUVs.

Should both models come to Australia, they could prove strong players for GM's local brand, Holden, in the small and medium SUV segments.

Currently the ageing Holden Captiva competes with medium SUVs like the CX-5 and Tucson along with other seven seaters like the Mitsubishi Outlander and Nissan X-Trail, along with the larger Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento.

Being slightly larger than the Trax/Mokka X siblings, the Crossland X could serve as a competitor to the Mitsubishi ASX and Nissan Qashqai while the Grandland X can take the Captiva's place in the medium SUV category, sitting below the 2018 Holden Equinox that will effectively replace the Captiva.

It's unknown whether Holden has plans to introduce either the Crossland X or Grandland X locally in the near future, with both SUVs absent from the company's future line-up launch in September.

Opel has confirmed that both the Grandland X and Crossland X will launch in 2017, so stay tuned to CarAdvice for more updates as they come to hand.
