2018 BMW X2 spied with less camouflage

The 2018 BMW X2 has been spied again on public roads before its anticipated release next year.

This latest pre-production prototype ditches the false body panels, present on earlier cars, that were used to conceal various styling features.

Unlike the concept car unveiled at this year's Paris motor show, the production X2 will have framed door windows, regular door handles, and wing mirrors. Aside from that, and a slightly toned down aero package, the concept shouldn't be a million miles away from the production vehicle.

As with the other SUV 'coupes' in BMW's lineup, such as the X4 and X6, the X2 is twinned to a more practical and higher-selling crossover. In this case, the X2 shares its front- and all-wheel drive platform with the second-generation X1.

Compared the X4 and X6, though, the X2 has a less-rakish tailgate. Perhaps, given its smaller size, BMW has decided not to sacrifice too much practicality in the quest for sportier looks.

Given its close relationship with the X1, the X2 will likely be offered with the same three- and four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel powertrains.

The X2 may also be offered with the plug-in hybrid drivetrain employed by the Mini Countryman S E and China-only X1 xDrive25Le iPerformance.

It's still not entirely clear when the production X2 will make its public debut, but on past form the X2 still has a few further layers of disguise to drop before it's ready for that big day.

This means that we probably won't see the X2 arrive in local showrooms until late in 2017 or 2018.
