Mercedes-AMG’s $2million hypercar closing in on sold-out status – report

The upcoming Mercedes-AMG hypercar isn't scheduled for release until late in 2018, but that hasn't stopped cashed-up buyers placing orders for almost the entire production run, according to a new report.

In a new article with industry journal Automotive News, Mercedes-AMG chairman, Tobias Moers, said the entire production run is almost sold out two years ahead of release.

"It's close to our production capacity," he said. "It's an amazing car. There's nothing else on the market."

While details of the upcoming hypercar are few and far between, Moers has already confirmed that the vehicle will utilise a powertrain based on the one used in the W07 Formula One race car - a 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 paired with an electric drive and ERS system.

The company's boss said in a recent interview with CarAdvice that carbon-fibre construction is "mandatory", while active aerodynamic features are also expected to feature.

We can also expect a five-digit redline as well, with Moers saying: "We run that (F1 engine) up to maybe 15,000 reps, maybe we reduce them a little bit for the road".

Mercedes-AMG is expected to produce between 200 and 300 examples of the hypercar, and will unveil it sometime next year as part of the company's 50th anniversary celebrations.

The Mercedes-AMG hypercar is believed to cost in excess of US$2million ($2.7 million), and will go toe-to-toe with Aston Martin's AM-RB 001 hypercar that is being developed in collaboration with the Red Bull Formula One team.
