Buick Velite PHEV concept debuts in Guangzhou, previews upcoming models

The Buick Velite plug-in hybrid (PHEV) concept has been unveiled at the 2016 Guangzhou motor show.

Serving as a template for future vehicles under the company's 'Buick Blue' new energy strategy, the Velite concept is a swoopy-styled crossover and previews an upcoming PHEV model from the American brand.

Up front the Velite sports a wide grille with Matrix LED headlights, which the company says hints at the styling of Buick's future 'new energy' vehicles.

The sloping roofline leads to a fastback-styled tailgate, while the body features a number of bulges and creases that give the Velite a muscular and sporty look.

Filling the arches are large alloy wheels, while underneath the show car body is a high-performance plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) powertrain, which Buick says is its new "modular intelligent electric drive system", though the company hasn't revealed what exactly that entails other than a modular lithium-ion battery pack.

No images of the interior have been released, but Buick claims the Velite's cabin is "elegant" in its design that incorporates recycled materials, a panoramic sunroof and induction ambient lighting – which the company says points to the direction of upcoming new energy models.

Other features include a WiFi hotspot, adaptive cruise control, low-speed autonomous driving assistant, night vision camera, and lane keep assist.

The Velite is the product of Buick's collaboration with the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) and the Shanghai Automotive and Industrial Corporation (SAIC) – the latter the parent company for Chinese brands like LDV and Chinese-owned marques like MG.
