In fact, by 2020, half of all Jaguar Land Rover models sold will have the option of electrification - be that, full electric, plug-in hybrid or mild hybrid - revealed Global Product and Strategy executive, Finbar McFall at the LA Auto Show this week.
“We will have plug-in hybrids very soon, even ahead of the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace. What we will soon have across the Jaguar Land Rover range, is a selection of plug-in hybrids, as well as more efficient petrol and diesel engines”.
No-one knows when the internal combustion engine will die off, leaving electric cars to become the norm. What we do know is that the timeframe is drawing ever so close, particularly when you consider the popularity of companies like Tesla over the last few years.
Dr Wolfgang Ziebart, Technical Design Director, Jaguar Land Rover predicts that by the end of 2025, “the share of new car registrations of electric vehicles will be around 20 per cent of all cars sold, at least in the major markets – Europe, the US, China and Japan.
“In China right now, there’s a massive push from the government towards electric vehicles; to reduce oil dependence and pollution in the cities, so we think cars like the I-Pace can help considerably in these efforts, given the car is clean, the range is rather high, so there’s less dependence on charging infrastructure”, he said.
Jaguar has already claimed the I-Pace Concept delivers a range of more than 500 kilometres, but Ziebart believes there is more to come.
“We are already at that point in the current phase of development, so there’s still some optimisation to come – meaning we can continue to squeeze out one kilometre after another, but there could also be some drawbacks.
“If customers only choose big wheels and wide tyres [with the I-Pace], there’s a certain deterioration effect on range, but I do think with our current range, give or take, the vehicle is easily something you can live with”, he added.
