Mazda RT24-P Le Mans racer revealed with 447kW 2.0-litre turbo

The stunning Mazda RT24-P race car has been revealed this week at the Los Angeles motor show.

Scheduled to make its racing debut at the 2017 Rolex 24 at Daytona in January, the Mazda RT24-P will compete in the top level of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship under Daytona Prototype international (DPi) rules.

Differing from an LMP2-class vehicle - which uses a standard body, V8 engine, and a chassis from one of four suppliers - the RT24-P uses Mazda's own bodywork and powertrain.

Wearing a version of Mazda's Kodo design language adapted to a Le Mans racer, the RT24-P looks fantastic, made even better by the company's hero 'Soul Red' paint.

Powering the RT24-P will be powered by the company's MZ-2.0T turbocharged inline four-cylinder racing engine.

Mazda says the unit produces around 600hp (447kW), more than the 5.9-litre V12 in the recently-revealed Aston Martin Vanquish S.

The RT24-P is named after the Mazda Road to 24 driver development program, which provides scholarships to help championship-winning drivers progress from the grassroots level to the upper categories of professional racing.

Meanwhile, the '24' also corresponds to the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine, and the 'P' refers to the vehicle's Prototype class.
