Audi Sport to double RS range by 2018 – report

The boss of Audi Sport, the German marque's performance sub-brand, has confirmed the company's RS range will be doubled by early 2018, according to a new report out of the UK.

According to Autocar, Stephan Winkelmann, head of Audi Sport and former boss of Italian supercar brand Lamborghini, said the company's fleet of RS-badged models will expand from the current seven to 15  over the next year or so.

Currently the range includes the RS3, RS Q3, TT RS, RS6 and RS7. RS versions of the new-generation A4 and A5 models would also be on the cards, given their presence in previous generations.

Beyond that, it appears buyers might soon expect an AMG-like approach to producing high-powered flagship variants of nearly every model on offer. If so, expect to see RS8, RSQ2 and RSQ7 models in the near future - among others.

"We have a lot of plans but are not revealing them yet," he said. "It is better to under-promise and over-deliver."

This year the company launched the 294kW/480Nm 2.5-litre turbo TT RS coupe (top) and roadster, along with revealing the RS3 sedan at the Paris motor show with the same engine - which will launch in Australia mid-2017.

When asked if the company would pursue making more standalone models along the lines of arch-rival Mercedes-AMG - perhaps like a smaller 'R6' sports car to sit alongside the R8 - Winkelmann was less forthcoming with details, though didn't squash any chances of a new model.

"Let's see," he told the British publication.
