2017 Mazda MX-5 RF pricing and specs: New hard-top in Australia from February

The 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF, the hardtop version of Mazda's iconic Japanese roadster, will go on sale in Australia from February 1 with a starting price of $38,550 before on-road costs.

Six different versions of the RF ('Retractable Fastback') will be available locally, with entry-level RF and more higher specified RF GT variants joining the current, four-strong roadster line-up.

Unlike the MX-5 roadster, which is available in choice of 1.5- or 2.0-litre engines, the RF will be powered exclusively by the larger two-litre naturally aspirated unit that produces 118kW and 200Nm.

Like the roadster versions, the RF is offered in either six-speed conventional manual or six-speed automatic forms, the latter adding $2000 to the list pricing.

The most affordable of the six hardtops, the MX-5 RF manual, is $4060 more expensive than its logical soft-top alternative, the MX-5 2.0 manual roadster, and a considerable $6560 pricier than the bottom of the MX-5 tree, the budget-savvy 1.5 rag-top.

Apart from the electrically operated folding hard roof (in lieu of the roadster's manually operated soft top), all RF version get a 4.6-inch colour TFT instrument display, LED headlights with adaptive front lighting, together with a leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear knob.

The regular RF in either manual ($38,550) or automatic ($40,550) guise gets cloth trim. Opting for RF GT raises the list pricing a substantial $5300 in both manual ($43,890) and automatic ($45,890) guises, which adds a choice of black or tan leather trim, seat heating, LED taillights and a nine-speaker Bose audio system that includes integrated headrest speakers in the seats.

All of these four versions come with body-coloured hardtops.

The final and ultimate 'fastback' versions are called RF GT with Black Roof - which, as the name suggests, presents a bespoke two-tone exterior aesthetic. These versions also lift the trim work inside the cabins from regular to a more supple Nappa leather specification. The models fitted with Piano Black hard lids carry a $1000 premium over the regular RF GTs.

As reported earlier, the Retractable Fastback design can raise or stow the electrically operated roof at a touch of a button at road speeds of up to 10km/h.

As previous reported, the RF introduces a new colour to the MX-5 line-up called Machine Grey, first introduced on the current CX-9 SUV and effectively substituting for the Meteor Grey Mica colour only available on the roadster. Machine Grey as well as Mazda's signature three-layer-effect Soul Red colour come as a $250 premium.

Local dealerships are now accepting orders for models within the RF range.
