Dodge Charger and Challenger replacements due 2020, Chrysler 300 to be axed – report

The Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger reportedly won't be replaced by Fiat Chrysler (FCA) until 2020, while the related Chrysler 300 won't make it to a third generation.

Sources have informed Automotive News that the replacements for the Dodge Charger sedan and Challenger coupe won't arrive until 2020.

These details were reportedly gleaned from details included in a labour agreement that was recently signed by FCA and Unifor, the union that covers Canadian auto workers.

As reported previously, the new Charger and Challenger will be based on a stretched and widened version of the Giorgio platform that has been developed as part of Alfa Romeo's attack on the mass luxury market, which is currently dominated by BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi.

For the next-generation range, the Charger sedan and Challenger coupe will be joined by a convertible, which is said to revive the Barracuda name even though it was historically a Plymouth model.

It's claimed that there won't be a next-generation iteration of the Chrysler 300. Ever since Fiat took on Chrysler after its government-managed bankruptcy, it has sought to eliminate direct competition from another brand in its portfolio.

This can be seen in the fact that there was no Chrysler version of the Dodge Dart, and no Dodge models competing against the Chrysler 200 sedan and Pacifica people mover.

To keep the rear- and all-wheel drive models going until 2020, the industry publication says that FCA will freshen up the Charger, Challenger and Chrysler 300 in time for the 2018 model year, which in the US begins in 2017.

The rear- and all-wheel drive Giorgio architecture, which will be used for next-generation Dodge performance models, made its debut underneath the Alfa Romeo Giulia sedan, which is already on sale in Europe and that's due to enter Australian showrooms in early 2017.

It will also be used on the Stelvio SUV. If FCA's grand plans come to fruition, it will also be used on Alfa's competitor to the BMW 5 Series and, possibly, the X5.
