Mercedes-AMG GT sedan coming to rival Panamera – report

Mercedes-AMG is planning to reveal a new performance sedan as part of its 50th birthday celebrations next year, a new report out of the UK suggests.

According to Autocar, the new ‘Vision’ concept will debut at a series of events next year, and will spawn a new four-door sports car dubbed ‘GT 4’ due for release in 2019.

Set to rival the likes of the Porsche Panamera and Bentley Continental Flying Spur, the so-called Mercedes-AMG GT 4 will be powered by a version of the company’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 and become AMG’s third dedicated series production model - following the SLS and current GT.

The British publication claims the new model wears the codename ‘X290’ and is the work of AMG boss Tobias Moers.

Speculation suggests the super-sedan will bear numerous styling similarities with its two-door sibling, though will be underpinned by a new platform as opposed to the bespoke aluminium component set used by the GT coupe and convertible.

As mentioned earlier, the GT 4 is expected to be powered by the latest version of the company’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 in two states of tune - one of which is likely to be the 450kW/850Nm unit seen in the recently-revealed E63.

Drive is likely to be sent to all four wheels via Mercedes-Benz’s 4Matic all-wheel drive system, suggesting the new model could have a lot in common with the new E63.

In the all-wheel-driven AMG E-Class, the V8 helps the big sedan sprint from 0-100km/h in just 3.4 seconds, on its way to a limited top speed of 300km/h with the AMG Driver’s Package.

Also under consideration is a new integrated starter generator (ISG), which would allow for a short burst of added performance through a 20bhp (15kW) electric motor mounted in the transmission.

That’s not the only benefit of such a system, however. It would also offer instantaneous start-up, which, according to an engineer quoted by Autocar, helps to deliver “seamless” stop-start operation.

In the meantime, we’ll have to wait and see until next year to have an idea of what this AMG super sedan will look like - if it exists.
