Weekend Deals on Wheels for November 5

It’s time for the latest instalment of Deals on Wheels, which this week looks at six factory-backed special offers for all you weekend shoppers.

This isn’t a promotional campaign, just us trying to offer you some interesting suggestions if you’re in the market for some new wheels.

Toyota HiLux SR5 — $52,990 drive-away

Is Toyota a little scared of the big-selling Ford Ranger XLT and Wildtrak range? The fact it’s selling HiLux SR5s for $52,990 (another $2000 for the auto) — a discount of about $6000 — suggests the answer is a ‘maybe’ at worst.

Discounts on the flagship HiLux were once anathema, because it sold itself. Right now, for people married to the idea of an Unbreakable ‘Lux, it’s the time to strike.

The SR5 is powered by the top-spec 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine with 3500kg braked towing capacity, downhill assist control, rear diff lock, electronic 4x2 and 4x4 transfer switch, heavy duty suspension, auto-levelling headlights, sat-nav and all the assorted mode cons. This, plus five-star ANCAP safety.

Before you commit, though, watch the HiLux underperforming in a recent dynamic test here.

Renault Clio Expression — $19,990 drive-away

Given its RRP (before on-roads) of $20,140, this is a sharp starting price for the mid-spec Renault Clio Expression. Furthermore, given the flat light car market, we reckon you should haggle harder for an even sharper deal. Push, push, push.

This tres chic city car gets a 900cc turbo triple with 66kW/135Nm, which isn’t much, but that’s what Paris-spec cars are all about. That, plus a manual gearbox, though you can get the auto for another $2000.

You get a 7.0-inch touchscreen with reversing camera and sat-nav, LED daytime running lights, and a complimentary Electric pack, with niceties such as keyless go, folding mirrors and a rain sensor.

This, plus Renault’s great five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty with full roadside assist, and transparent and published servicing costs. Don’t buy a Yaris, buy this. It’s much more interesting.

Volvo XC60 D4 AWD Luxury — $59,888 drive-away

You’re saving thousands on the 2016 Volvo XC60 diesel AWD at this price point. A sub-$60k deal on this aged but still excellent family hauler also puts it right in the thick of things against a top-spec Mazda CX-5 Akera or Volkswagen Tiguan Highline.

Additionally, Volvo is throwing in a free Driver Support Pack, which adds adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and blind-spot monitoring.

Tempted? The Swedish brand is finally getting realistic about its pricing here, and is also doing very good deals on the V40, S60 and XC90, as you can read here.

Mitsubishi Triton GLS 4WD — $39,490 drive-away

Ok, a Triton on special. Same old, same old. Mitsubishi has been selling these at a discount forever. But a revisit is due.

The mid-range GLS 4WD grab us, given it’s kicking off from only $39,490 in dual-cab form, which is thousands below the Ranger, HiLux and co. You get dual-zone air conditioning, touchscreen with reversing camera, and Mitsubishi’s great Super Select 4WD dial with on- and off-road 4WD modes.

Having lived with a Triton, we’ve grown to appreciate its refined 2.4-litre diesel engine, spacious cabin and good running costs. A very respectable offering.

Volkswagen Amarok Core — $39,990 drive-away

Want to drop $40,000 on a ute but not a Mitsubishi fan? Volkswagen is throwing Amaroks out the door as it gears up for the updated model. The very capable Core — see us beat the hell out of one here — is a lot of load-hauler for the money.

It comes with the twin-turbo diesel engine and 4x4 system, six-speed manual gearbox, rear diff lock, ATR Pirelli off-road tyres, a 1020kg payload and a tray wide enough for a pallet — just.

If you throw this onto VW Finance, you also get a five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty for some peace of mind. The Amarok’s driving manners make it perfect for city-based tradies, in particular.

BMW Festival of M — free M Sport packages (use any M Sport car)

BMW Australia is holding a “festival”, by offering a free M Sport package across its range until the end of November, as a sweetener to secure your money.

The M Sport pack adds M alloy wheels, lower and stiffer M Sport suspension, aero package, M leather steering wheel (perhaps the nicest wheel this side of a Porsche), sports buckets seats and M-badged silver door sills.
