The new fifth generation of BMW’s iDrive infotainment system is now available across more models, after previously being reserved for the flagship 7 Series limousine.
Now offered across the majority of the Bavarian marque’s line-up, iDrive 5 brings a more app-based interface that is similar to a smartphone.
Other changes include 4G network capability, an improved voice recognition system, updated iDrive buttons for easier navigation through menus, a split-screen menu preview function along with enhanced steering wheel controls.
In addition to the software changes, the iDrive controller itself has been redesigned and is now touch sensitive on more models – allowing users to transcribe instructions.
A three-dimensional vehicle model appears when selecting lighting options or drive modes, and changes its appearance based on these selections.
The same 3D model is used in the latest online user manual, which features animated demonstrations for everything from front-end collision warning systems to adaptive headlights.
First making its debut in the 7 Series in 2015, iDrive 5 with Professional Navigation is now available on the following models:
BMW 1 Series and 2 Series – standard on M140i, 230i and M240i, optional on all other variants
BMW 3 Series Sedan and Touring – standard on 330i, 330e and 340i, option on other variants
BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo – standard on 330i, optional on 320d
BMW 4 Series – standard on all variants
BMW 6 Series – standard on all variants
BMW 7 Series – standard on all variants (with touchscreen)
BMW X3 and X4 – standard on xDrive28i and xDrive30d, optional on other variants
BMW X5 and X6 – standard on all variants (with touchscreen)
While the wider BMW range now receives this updated fifth-generation infotainment system, it appears iDrive 5 in these models doesn’t support the wireless Apple CarPlay functionality and enhanced BMW ConnectedDrive features, like Remote 3D View function, that were revealed with the all-new ‘G30’ 5 Series sedan.
