2017 Mazda CX-5 teased ahead of LA reveal

The next-generation 2017 Mazda CX-5 has been previewed today ahead of its world premiere at next month's Los Angeles motor show.

Scheduled to be unveiled on November 16, the new CX-5 medium SUV is claimed by Mazda to take the company’s ‘Kodo - Soul of Motion’ design language to “a new level”.

In a single teaser image released by the company, Mazda’s next-generation mid-sizer has similar proportions to the smaller CX-3 - most notably the long bonnet and short rear overhang.

In terms of the CX-5’s design, however, it’s clear the new model will draw a good deal of inspiration from the big new CX-9 - with a more aggressive and angular face, along with slimmer, sharper head- and tail-lights.

A prototype of the new SUV was spied in August, albeit it wearing a heap of black and white camouflage.

However, the development vehicle did give an indication of the new car’s shape, which shouldn’t stray too far from that of the current model.

The most substantial changes will occur up front, with the new CX-5 boasting a much sportier and aggressive nose, similar to its CX-3 and CX-9 siblings.

Out back, the changes are far less obvious, though a new tail-light design and possibly a chrome strip between the two lighting units (a la CX-9) distinguishing the new car from the one on sale today.

No images of the new CX-5’s interior have been snapped yet, though it’s likely to get a significant overhaul, considering the current car’s cockpit dates back to 2012.

Under the bonnet will be a selection of Mazda’s SkyActiv petrol and diesel engines, likely including updated versions of the current 138kW/250Nm 2.5-litre petrol and 129kW/420Nm turbo-diesel.

Also on the cards is the 2.5-litre turbo from the larger CX-9, producing 170kW of power and 420Nm of torque, giving the Japanese manufacturer a rival to the turbocharged Ford Kuga and Subaru Forester variants.

Other updates include the company’s G-Vectoring Control technology, which has already debuted in the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6.

Despite its age, the CX-5 remains the Australian sales leader in the medium SUV segment.

In September, Mazda sold 2662 units, with 19,090 sold year-to-date - up 18.2 per cent on the same time last year.

That puts the CX-5 well ahead of its competitors, with the Hyundai Tucson (2209 September, 14,969 YTD) and Toyota RAV4 (1617 September, 14,936 YTD) in second and third in the medium SUV sales race respectively.
