While we don’t have full details of what the final production version of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class will be in terms of equipment, the concept model – particularly the Powerful Adventurer with its beefy body styling – could provide a few free hints.
For instance, that version of the Mercedes-Benz Concept X-Class features an electronic winch as part of the front bumper assembly, which is something that not many rival utes offer as a factory option.
But while neither of the show car pick-ups had the sorts of extras that buyers in Australia might like – bull bars, nudge bars, canopies and the like – those are all destined to be offered as options, the brand has confirmed.
Dr Marion Friese, head of marketing Mercedes-Benz Vans, said ute owners want their vehicles to be tailor-made to their specific needs.
“Pick-ups are huge in individualisation and customisation. That is something that came, of course, new for us, but as a manufacturer of vans... we have the body builders that change our vans. But the kind of individualisation [for pick-ups] is new for us, and we had to learn about it,” Friese said.
“But we learnt it is important to have bull bars, to have sports bars, to have lights, to have bed covers, to have canopies – and therefore we said ‘okay, if we are going into that business, give our designers the task to do this work for buyers’. This is integral and important for a pick-up,” she added.
Dominik Amann, head of product management for the Mercedes-Benz mid-size pick-up, elaborated further.
“Pick-up customers are basically as diverse as life. And basically, if you look outside you will hardly find any pick-ups that look like the other. If you look a bit closer, almost every pick-up is fitted with accessories or customisation parts,” Amann said.
“Of course, we will offer many possibilities for individualisation, by lines, packages and the full range of options to give the customer the possibility to create the vehicle he or she needs.
“But there’s more than that – for the first time at Mercedes-Benz, we developed a dedicated project that developed a comprehensive portfolio of customisation parts: for instance, bed liners, bed covers, styling elements and protection elements,” he said.
“These customisation parts are not just off the shelf products – they are designed, engineered and tested by Mercedes-Benz, so they are of course of the highest quality, and will perfectly fit the distinguishing design of our vehicle.”
