BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition revealed, Australian arm in the hunt

The hardcore BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition has been revealed, celebrating BMW Motorsport Works driver Marco Wittmann's 2016 DTM driver's title.

While the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (German Touring Car Championship) series isn't quite as well known here as some others, BMW Australia has nonetheless indicated its interest in an allocation of this special new M4.

Limited to just 200 units globally, the M4 DTM Champion Edition features performance upgrades and aero enhancements similar to the limited-run M4 GTS revealed earlier this year.

Using the same powerplant from the M4 GTS, BMW has upped outputs over the regular M4 by 51kW and 50Nm - to 368kW of power and 600Nm of torque - through the use of a water-injection system that sprays water into the air intake, reducing combustion chamber temperatures by around 25 degrees celsius.

Thanks to the power bump, the M4 DTM special is capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 3.8 seconds, on its way to a ‘limited’ top speed of 305km/h - identical to the M4 GTS.

Claimed fuel consumption is rated at 8.5L/100km on the combined European cycle.

Exclusively available in Alpine White, the M4 DTM features DTM-inspired exterior design elements, including the tri-colour BMW Motorsport stripes, in addition to the carbon-finished front splitter, ‘aero flicks’ positioned in front of the wheel arches, exterior mirror caps, side skirt attachments and rear diffuser, along with with large rear wing on the bootlid.

The special-edition M4 also features adaptive LED headlights, high-beam assistant, OLED tail-lights, front and rear parking sensors, along with auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors - equipment seen in the M4 GTS.

Also like the M4 GTS, the M4 DTM is fitted with weight-saving components like a carbon-fibre reinforced plastic bonnet, roof, instrument panel support and rear diffuser.

Four titanium exhaust tips stick out the rear, with BMW claiming these modifications give the M4 “further optimised dynamic handling qualities”.

This is further aided by the 265/35 R19 front and 285/30 R20 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 high-performance tyres that are specifically designed for use on the track.

Stopping power is provided by M carbon-ceramic brakes that the company claims provide fade-free braking “even in tough racing conditions”.

The brakes are housed in 19-inch front and 20-inch rear ‘666 M’ star spoke alloy wheels finished in matte grey.

Under the skin, the three-way coil-over suspension features individual adjustment for rebound and damping.

Inside, the two-seater M4 DTM features M Carbon bucket seats trimmed in Alcantara and ‘Merino’ leather. The Alcantara trim lines the majority of the interior, including the M Sports steering wheel.

White rollover bars replace the rear seats, reinforcing the car’s track-oriented intentions.

It’s unknown whether the M4 DTM is the production version of the aero-happy M4 prototype spotted doing rounds at the Nurburgring circuit in August, however, that vehicle did feature slightly more aggressive front, side and rear aerodynamic treatments, suggesting there could be an even crazier M4 in the pipeline.

Australia

Speaking at the launch of the updated 1 Series and 2 Series range this week, BMW’s local arm said it is keen to bring the M4 DTM Champion Edition here, though exact details on allocation and pricing are still to be confirmed.

It seems the likelihood is firming, though, as current order-holders for the M4 GTS have been given the option to swap their spot in the queue for the even more exclusive DTM special.
