Audi R8 e-tron axed – report

The Audi R8 e-tron will be quietly axed from the company's lineup once the build run for already ordered vehicles is completed.

An unnamed Audi source has told Car and Driver that production will cease soon, and that over its short lifetime "fewer than 100" vehicles were built.

That shouldn't be too much of a surprise given that the car was only ever available in Europe and was said to start from around one million euros ($1.46 million). A build-to-order vehicle, the R8 e-tron never appeared on the company's online configurator.

The rear-wheel drive R8 e-tron featured two motors on the rear axle, which together developed a total of 340kW of power and 920Nm of torque. That's enough to propel the two-door coupe from 0-100km/h in 3.9 seconds.

As a comparison, the rest of the second-generation R8 range uses a 5.2-litre V10 engine. In the base model, the 10-pot engine cranks out 397kW/540Nm for 0-100km/h time of 3.5 seconds, while V10 Plus variant has 449kW/560Nm to its name and completes the 0-100kmh/h dash in 3.2 seconds.

A T-shaped 92kWh lithium-ion battery pack lies under the R8 e-tron's floor and, when fully charged, the R8 e-tron has a claimed driving range of around 450km. Attached to a fast charger the electric supercar can recharged in under two hours.

The R8 e-tron was launched at the 2015 Geneva motor show, and was shown off again a few months later at the CES Asia tech show in Shanghai. This time around, the R8 e-tron also featured the company's autonomous driving technology in addition to an electric drivetrain.
