2017 Volvo S90 launched in Australia from $79,900
The 2017 Volvo S90 range has officially launched Down Under, giving the Swedish marque a rival to the German duo of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series.
Starting at $79,900 plus on-road costs for the entry-level T5 Momentum and topping out at $98,900 plus on-road costs for the flagship T6 Inscription all-wheel drive variant, the S90 undercuts the recently-launched E-Class range by a margin between $10,000 and $40,000 depending on the variant.
Unlike the closely-related XC90 SUV, the S90 will see advanced driver assistance technologies fitted as standard, including the semi-autonomous IntelliSafe Assist - which combines adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist to keep the vehicle in the centre of the lane between 50km/h and 130km/h - and low-speed autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian, cyclist and now large animal protection (e.g. horses and cows).
Standard on the T5 and D4 Momentum ($82,400) variants are four-zone climate control with interior air quality sensor, keyless start, 12.3-inch driver display, electric front seats with driver’s memory function and lumbar support, electric boot lid, ‘Thor’ LED adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, blind spot information system, 18-inch alloy wheels and ‘Moritz’ leather upholstery.
Powering the T5 is a 187kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol while the D4 employs a 140kW/400Nm 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel.
Stepping up to the D5 ($96,900) and T6 Inscription models adds all-wheel drive, keyless entry and start, ambient interior lighting, Nappa leather upholstery and larger 19-inch alloy wheels.
Under the bonnet the D5 features an uprated 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel producing 173kW/480Nm, with the T6 using a 2.0-litre twin-charged (turbocharged and supercharged) petrol engine with outputs of 235kW and 400Nm. Volvo claims a 0-100km/h time of 5.9 seconds for the T6.
For $3000 on all models customers can order the optional technology package, which adds DAB digital radio, 360-degree camera system, a head-up display and Apple CarPlay.
The first S90s to arrive locally are the D5 and T6 Inscription variants, which hit showrooms this month. November will see the arrival of the price-leading T5 and D4 Momentum models.
Joining the range next year will be the T6 R-Design which features sportier design and trim elements, along with the 304kW/640Nm plug-in hybrid (PHEV) T8 R-Design.
