Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV update won’t hit Australia until next year

The facelifted Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV won't land in Australia until sometime in 2017, according to the company’s local arm.

Speaking to CarAdvice, John Taylor, product communications manager at Mitsubishi Australia, said: “We don’t have any announcements about Outlander PHEV at this stage, [but] we are expecting an updated model sometime next year”.

The facelifted Outlander PHEV was first revealed overseas in June last year. But, while the regular petrol and diesel models were updated in Australia around the same time, the revitalised PHEV has still yet to replace its pre-facelift predecessor here.

As part of the mid-life update, the refreshed Outlander PHEV wears the new ‘Dynamic Shield’ design language that adorns its conventional siblings, while changes to the body, chassis and powertrain are claimed to improve hybrid fuel-efficiency and throttle response.

With the minor powertrain revisions, the company claims a slightly improved all-electric range of 60.8km on the Japanese cycle (about 52.6 on the Australian cycle) - 0.6km greater on its predecessor.

Additionally, the new model adds safety features like a surround camera system, new 18-inch alloy wheels, more padding on the seats, and a new heated steering wheel.

Other improvements to noise vibration harshness (NVH) levels, along with ride and handling were also detailed by Mitsubishi when the facelifted SUV was revealed last year.

Last month the company announced the 2017 model-year petrol and diesel Outlander range, which brought the addition of a new infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, along with numerous safety features including lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam and blind-spot monitoring depending on variant.

When the updated Outlander PHEV joins the range, expect it to bring most, if not all, of the new safety features and interior upgrades seen in the 2017 petrol and diesel range.

The pre-facelift Outlander PHEV is currently on sale in Australia as a single variant, advertised on the company’s website at $49,990 drive-away.
