Mazda beats Toyota in September SUV sales

In a remarkable result, Mazda sold more SUV models in Australia during September than annual market leader Toyota.

This is despite the fact that Mazda only has three SUV models to sell, compared to Toyota with six different offerings across its larger dealer network.

On the back of its annual M Day sale, Mazda sold 5181 SUVs, up 27 per cent. This put it ahead of annual leader Toyota on 5021, which was down 6 per cent. Number three some distance back was Mitsubishi, on 3768.

With these high-riding vehicles set to become the dominant vehicle type — SUV sales as a whole are up 10 per cent this year while passenger cars have dropped off 6 per cent — it’s an intriguing result.

SUVs make up 37.4 per cent of the market this year.

Mazda led multiple segments. The Mazda CX-3 won the small SUV race with 1878 (up 27 per cent), ahead of the Mitsubishi ASX, Nissan Qashqai and Honda HR-V.

It’s Toyota’s lack of a contender in this corner of the market that bites it, though the radically styled Toyota C-HR crossover launches in the first quarter of 2017.

One size up, the Mazda CX-5 had a mammoth month with 2662 sales, taking almost 20 per cent of the dominant medium SUV segment, making it the sixth top-selling car in market.

By comparison, the Toyota RAV4 competitor managed 1617 units, down 3 per cent in a segment up 13 per cent, putting it in third place behind the Hyundai Tucson.

In the large SUV sales race, the new Mazda CX-9 managed an impressive 641 sales, more than double what the old model managed in September 2015. This was the model line’s second best month on record.

This paled next to Toyota though, which grabbed 940 units with the Kluger and a vast 1160 with the Prado. The now-axed Toyota FJ Cruiser managed 164 units, and the HiLux-based Fortuner netted 237.

Rounding out Toyota’s range was the LandCruiser wagon line-up with 903 sales, spanking the Nissan Patrol on 277.

Mazda Australia managing director Martin Benders said: “We are delighted with the September sales performance of every nameplate in the Mazda range. It is particularly satisfying to see so many records set.”

As we have reported, Toyota was the overall market leader in September with all car types included, with 16,716 sales compared to 12,009 for Mazda, which was second.
