Ram Rebel TRX concept debuts with detuned Hellcat V8 engine

The Ram Rebel TRX concept with a supercharged V8 engine has been unveiled at the 2016 State Fair of Texas.

Under the bonnet, the Rebel TRX concept uses a version of the company's 6.2-litre supercharged V8 engine with 429kW of power, which is down from the 527kW/880Nm it makes in the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat and Challenger SRT Hellcat.

Although the V8 engine has been detuned significantly from the Dodge muscle cars, it's still the most powerful ute yet from Ram. The company says that the Rebel TRX is capable of doing up to 160km/h in off-road mode, but, oddly, no other performance figures for the souped-up ute have yet to publicised.

The Rebel TRX is fitted with four-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a locking rear differential. The concept rides on knobbly off-road tyres that are 37 inches (940mm) tall and 13.5 inches (343mm) wide.

Visually, you won't mistake the Rebel TRX for the standard Ram 1500 pickup, as it features flared wheel arches with black plastic extensions, badging that deserves its own postcode, bonnet vents, an LED light bar on the roof, a bash plate element at the front, and two spare tyres mounted in the cargo tray.

Inside, the concept features seats with suede-covered bolsters, a cloth mesh centre section, and six-point harnesses. There's also plenty of red stitching, unique door pulls, a lever-style gear changer, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, and a TRX branded tool bag.

It's not clear whether Fiat Chrysler has any plans to put the Rebel TRX into production. If it does, it will be seen as a competitor to the Ford F-150 Raptor.
