2017 Nissan Micra revealed in Paris

The all-new 2017 Nissan Micra has been revealed at the Paris motor show, representing a complete makeover for the brand’s light hatch.

Headlining the fifth-generation Micra is the inclusion of active safety technologies; like autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and lane departure assist, along with new powertrains, upgraded infotainment, and obviously, a completely new look - inspired by the 2015 Nissan Sway concept.

Gone is the bubbly, cutesy shape of its predecessor, with the Micra now sporting a much sharper design and sleeker profile. Up front is a new interpretation of Nissan’s V-motion grille and sharper headlights, while a prominent character line runs along the sides to the rear - which features boomerang-shaped tail-lights and a floating roof design.

This new design brings the Micra in line with other Nissan models, including the Juke, Qashqai and X-Trail SUVs.

Measuring 3999mm long, 1743mm wide and 1455mm tall, the new Micra is 174mm longer, 77mm wider and 55mm shorter than its predecessor. The wheelbase has grown by a significant 75mm to 2525mm, which will no doubt improve rear passenger comfort.

Personalisation will be a big selling point of the new Micra, which is available in 10 colours - including the bright Energy Orange of the show car - along with additional exterior and interior personalisation options which allow for 125 different combinations.

For the first time, the Micra will be offered with an array of Nissan’s active safety features across all grades.

It will be the first in its segment to be available with lane-departure assist, while the Micra also offers autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian protection and a surround camera system - normally reserved for larger models.

Other advanced technologies include traffic sign recognition, high beam assist and blind spot monitoring.

Nissan says these systems are the building blocks for autonomous driving and are an integral part of the company’s ‘Intelligent Mobility’ vision.

Inside, the Micra will be available with a 7.0-inch colour infotainment system, equipped with satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and access to downloadable apps.

Audiophiles will be happy to hear that the new hatch will be offered with an all-new six-speaker Bose Personal sound system, which is optimised for the driver - featuring two speakers built into the driver’s headrest.

Like the Qashqai and X-Trail, the Micra will feature Active Ride Control, which controls the engine and brakes when travelling over bumps to limit the vehicle’s fore-aft pitching motion.

Nissan has gone to great lengths to improve the Micra’s refinement levels, upping the use of sound-insulating materials and optimising aerodynamics - achieving a drag coefficient of 0.29.

Under the bonnet at launch (in Europe at least) will be a choice of three engines; two petrol, one diesel.

The first powerplant is a tiny 0.9-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, producing 66kW of power and 140Nm of torque (150Nm on overboost).

Next up is a 54kW/95Nm 1.0-litre three-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol. Third is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, with outputs of 66kW and 220Nm.

All three engines are mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

The all-new fifth-generation Nissan Micra will be manufactured at Renault’s Flins facility in France, courtesy of the Renault-Nissan alliance.

Sales in Europe will commence from March 2017. No word has been given yet as to whether the new Micra will be available Down Under, so stay tuned for an update.
