2017 Mitsubishi Outlander pricing and specs: New infotainment and added safety features

UPDATE: This article originally referenced details from a leaked dealership bulletin. Mitsubishi Australia has now officially announced details and pricing of the new Outlander range. See bottom of article for details.

The updated 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander range has been detailed in dealership documents, bringing a new infotainment system and active safety features to the company’s medium SUV.

Across the range changes include the company’s new 7.0-inch Smartphone Link Display Audio infotainment system – which incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility – along with DAB+ digital radio, a new centre console, a 12V socket in the cargo area, and a new shark fin antenna on the roof.

Outlanders equipped with all-wheel drive also swap out the old manual parking brake for a new electric one.

In the entry-level LS variant, seven seats and heated electric folding mirrors are fitted as standard to the automatic version, while both manual and automatic models see the addition of dual-zone climate control.

For 2017, the mid-tier XLS variant has been dropped in favour of a new LS Safety Pack model, which is primarily aimed at the fleet market.

The LS Safety Pack is available with five seats in two- and all-wheel drive petrol forms and seven seats in both all-wheel drive petrol and diesel configurations.

Added features in the LS Safety Pack model include forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beam, electrochromatic rear-view mirror, automatic headlights and wipers, while diesel models get steering-mounted paddle shifters.

Sitting at the top of the range is the Exceed, which sees the following features added for the new model year; 360-degree camera system, LED fog lights, blind spot monitoring, lane change assistance, rear cross-traffic alert and a misacceleration mitigation system.

The misacceleration mitigation system uses the Outlander’s ultrasonic front and rear parking sensors to detect obstacles around the vehicle, and suppresses the engine’s output if a collision is imminent.

Operating at low speeds of between 0-10km/h in either drive or reverse, the new system also detects if the driver depresses the accelerator pedal hard or abruptly.

Both the LS Safety Pack and Exceed feature an updated autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system, which now uses camera and laser radar sensors as opposed to the 2016 model’s bumper-mounted Milimeter-Wavelength radar.

With the new sensors, the Outlander is now able to detect pedestrians at speeds up to 65km/h, while vehicles are detected at up to 80km/h.

As with the previous year, the Outlander will be offered in a choice of seven colours.

LS and LS Safety Pack models feature black cloth-trimmed seats, while the Exceed receives leather-trimmed pews.

Front-wheel driven petrol Outlander models continue to be powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine, while all-wheel driven variants offer the choice of a 2.4-litre petrol or a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel.

It’s unknown whether any improvements to performance or consumption have been made for 2017. The current the 110kW/190Nm 2.0-litre petrol uses 6.7-7.0L/100km (CVT/manual) on the combined cycle, while the 124kW/220Nm 2.4-litre unit claims 7.2L/100km and the 110kW/360Nm 2.2-litre diesel sips fuel at a rate of 6.2L/100km.

Servicing is required every 15,000 kilometres or 12 months, whichever comes first, with the company’s capped-price maintenance plan covering the first four scheduled visits.

Final pricing and timing is yet to be announced, with Mitsubishi Australia telling CarAdvice an announcement regarding the 2017 Outlander range will be made "soon".

Update: Mitsubishi has officially announced the updated 2017 Outlander range, confirming the changes mentioned above, along with the inclusion of LED foot well lighting and an LED-lit centre console box.

The company says the SUV's suspension has been revised to enhance overall ride comfort and stability; including new shock valves, rear toe link bushes, lower friction font struts with new damping and tweaked rear shocks.
