2017 Holden Astra preliminary specs and pricing revealed, on sale in December – UPDATE

UPDATE: Holden has released official pricing and further details for the 2017 Astra range. See bottom of article for details

The first details on what to expect from the 2017 Holden Astra range have been revealed on the company's website.

Based on this information, the all-new Opel-sourced Astra small hatchback will be offered in Australia in three grades: the entry level Holden Astra R, the mid-spec Holden Astra RS, and the flagship Holden Astra RS-V.

Now, RS is usually associated with performance variants, and there is a difference in what's under the bonnet of the base car and the mid- and high-tier versions.

In the R is a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, which is expected to produce identical outputs to that in Europe: 110kW of power from 5000-5600rpm, and 230Nm of torque from 2000-4000rpm for the six-speed manual, while the six-speed automatic has 235Nm.

No fuel figures are available yet, but in Europe the claim is between 4.9 and 5.4 litres per 100 kilometres.

The RS and RS-V models will get a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces "up to" 147kW of power (at 5500rpm) and 280Nm of torque between 1650-3500rpm (that figure increases to 300Nm using the overboost function).

It is expected to be sold with both a six-speed manual and six-speed automatic, with acceleration of about 7.8 seconds from 0-100km/h (between 0.7 and 1.2sec quicker than the 1.4) while using 5.9L/100km.

The R model is likely to be the first to arrive with an automatic gearbox, available from December 2016 alongside the manual version.

The RS and RS-V manual versions are set to go one sale in Australia from December with the manual transmission, with the automatic models due to touch down in Australia in March 2017.

Update: Holden has confirmed recommended retail pricing for the 2017 Astra range, along with an on-sale date of December 2016.

The company has also confirmed the availability of segment-first IntelliLux LED matrix headlights as a cost option for the top-spec RS-V variant.

Also detailed in Holden's release is the benefits of the Astra's new architecture, which has resulted in a weight reduction of up to 130 kilograms.
