2016 Infiniti Q50 pricing and specs: 298kW twin-turbo V6 tops updated line-up

A new twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine headlines a revised, and dearer, 2016 Infiniti Q50 range, with a 298kW/475Nm Red Sport model presenting buyers with a new rear-wheel-drive performance flagship from the luxury Japanese marque.

Joining the existing turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel four-cylinder engines, and 3.5-litre V6 petrol-electric hybrid unit, the new twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 is available in two outputs, across two variants – with all engine options paired with the same seven-speed automatic transmission.

Priced from $69,900 (before on-road costs) the 2016 Infiniti Q50 3.0tt Sport Premium boasts 224kW of power (at 6400rpm) and 400Nm of torque (between 1600-5200rpm).

With turbo boost pressure wound up from 9.5psi to 14.7psi, the $79,900 (before on-road costs) 2016 Infiniti Q50 3.0tt Red Sport is gifted 298kW of power (at 6400rpm) and 475Nm of torque (between 1600-5200rpm).

A successor to Nissan/Infiniti’s VQ-series V6 powerplants, the new direct injection VR30 engine features an aluminium construction, engine block bore coating, an integrated exhaust manifold, and a water-cooled intercooler system.

The higher tuned 298kW version is additionally highlighted by dual water pumps (the 224kW version having a single water pump), a specific mid-pipe exhaust design, and a 3.1:1 final drive ratio (the 224kW variant having a 2.9:1 final drive ratio).

Although even Infiniti admits styling “is largely unchanged”, all updated Q50 models include the second generation of Infiniti’s ‘Direct Adaptive Steering’ (DAS) system – now with ‘Active Lane Control’.

Automatic and auto-levelling LED headlights with integrated daytime running lights and high-beam assist is also standard across the board, along with keyless entry, automatic dual-zone climate control and rear air vents, leather-appointed upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a leather and aluminium gearshift knob, rain-sensing wipers and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

The list continues with front and rear parking sensors, an around-view monitor with rear moving object detection, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming with voice recognition, DAB+ digital radio, satellite navigation, dual 7.0- and 8.0-inch touchscreens, hill-start assist, a foot-brake, and tyre pressure monitoring.

All models in the range offer drivers the flexibility of Standard, Snow, Sport, and Personal drive modes via a transmission tunnel-mounted Drive Mode Selector, with the two new 3.0tt models and V6 hybrid adding Eco and Sport + options to the mix.

All entry-level GT models roll on 17-inch light alloy wheels, with 19-inch items gracing all others in the range. All wheels come standard with run-flat tyres.

The new Q50 3.0tt Sport Premium and Red Sport also receive Infiniti’s new ‘Dynamic Digital Suspension’ – which teams electronically adjustable shock absorbers with the car’s Drive Mode Selector technology – improved gearbox “logic and hardware”, dual transmission coolers, magnesium paddle shifters, and performance brakes comprising four-piston calipers and 355mm discs up front and two-piston calipers and 350mm discs out back.

Styling wise, the Q50 3.0tt Sport Premium wears a silver ‘S’ badge, while the 3.0tt Red Sport wears a red ‘S’ badge, and has its rear end garnished with a black, boot-lip spoiler.

All Sport Premium and Red Sport model grades also have a sport grille, sport front bumper, and power sunroof. The GT’s standard eight-way power adjustable passenger seats additionally make way for a 10-way driver’s seat in all higher spec models.

The entire 2016 Infiniti Q50 line-up is rear-wheel drive, with the exception of the special order-only all-wheel-drive Q50 Hybrid.

There are nine exterior colour choices – Chestnut Bronze, Malbec Black, Liquid Platinum, Graphite Shadow, Black Obsidian, Venetian Ruby, Moonlight White, Hagane Blue, and a new Iridium Blue – and two interior finishes – Graphite and Stone.

All Q50s come with a four-year/100,000km warranty, with the new 3.0tt variants requiring scheduled services every 12 months or 15,000km (whichever comes first). Infiniti Cars Australia says specific pricing for each scheduled service will be announced in due course.
