Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep recall 1.9 million vehicles globally for airbag fault:: Australian models affected

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has issued a recall for 1.4 million Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles in the US over concerns a wiring fault could prevent the airbags from deploying and the seatbelt pretensioner from tightening, in the event of a collision.

It’s believed a specific restraint control module and front impact sensor combination are affected, and the fault is potentially linked to three fatalities and five injuries overseas.

The US recall affects around 1.4 million Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles, including the 2010 Chrysler Sebring, 2011-2014 Chrysler 200, 2010-2012 Dodge Caliber, 2010-2014 Dodge Avenger, 2010-2014 Jeep Compass and 2010-2014 Jeep Patriot.

Additionally, 142,959 of the above models are being recalled in Canada and 81,901 units in Mexico - which adds the 2010 Chrysler Cirrus to the list of affected models.

Outside of North America, a further 284,051 vehicles are being recalled, including the 2012-2013 Lancia Flavia in Europe - a rebadged version of the Chrysler 200.

Combining the numbers of affected vehicles from each region, the recall totals over 1.9 million units.

According to Reuters, General Motors (GM) recalled 4.3 million vehicles globally for a similar, though not identical issue , which involved a software issue potentially stopping the airbags from deploying - no Australian models are reported to be affected.

Australia

Lucy McLellan, director of corporate communications at FCA Australia, told CarAdvice that some Australian-delivered models are affected, though the tally is far smaller than the overseas numbers.

“FCA Australia expects to recall less than 23,000 vehicles as part of a broader global recall concerning certain vehicles' Occupant Restraint Controller that may prevent airbag and seatbelt pretensioner deployment capability”, she said.

“While FCA Australia is still working with the relevant authorities to publicly confirm the number of vehicles involved, the recall will include certain Jeep Patriot and Compass models built between 2010 and 2014 and Dodge Caliber models built between 2010 and 2012.”

No local incidents have been reported.

The company encourages owners to ensure their contact details are up to date, as it will be contacting affected customers shortly.

In September alone this is the third recall for the company's local arm, with two separate recalls affecting certain Jeep Cherokee models for a wiring issue (part of a wider global recall) and missing wheel spats.
