2017 Renault Clio RS 16 spied

The Renault Clio RS 16 seems like it will soon be heading into production, if these spy photos are anything to go by.

Compared to the Clio RS 16 concept that made its debut just before the Monaco Grand Prix, this prototype seems to be missing a few items, including flared wheel arches, 19-inch alloy wheels, chequered flag-style driving lights, and squared off exhaust tips.

This prototype still features the concept's unmissable rear wing.

Some of these elements, like the driving lights, might pop up on the production RS 16, as they're already fitted to the regular models in the facelifted Clio RS range.

It's understood that the production RS 16 still manages to cram the Megane RS 275 Trophy R’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine under the bonnet. This motor drives the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.

With 201kW of power at 5500rpm, and 360Nm of torque between 3000 and 5000rpm on hand, the RS 16 should easily outperform the Clio RS220, which has a mere 162kW/260Nm from its 1.6-litre turbo engine.

To help keep weight down, the prototype seen here is missing rear seats. It also features Michelin tyres and Brembo brakes.

A report last month indicated that production of the RS 16 will be limited to around 500 units, with pricing in continental Europe said to be start from around 40,000 euros ($58,700).

That's a significant step up from the Clio RS200, which starts from 26,300 euros ($38,600) in France.
