2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet cuts back the camouflage

The upcoming 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet has been spied again, this time wearing slightly less camouflage.

Gone is the false ‘whale tail’ spoiler that adorned the bootlid of the prototype spied in April, as are the bulky rear bumper add-ons and the stickers surrounding the front grille, though the swirly black and white wrap remains.

Despite the heavy disguise, it’s fairly obvious - and no surprise - the drop-top E-Class will look very much like the smaller C-Class Cabriolet and larger S-Class Cabriolet, adopting the company’s family styling for two-door body styles.

No interior shots have been snapped yet, but expect styling and features in the cab's cockpit to be largely identical to the interior of the coupe prototype spied in May.

The new coupe and convertible will be underpinned by the same platform that the E-Class sedan and wagon roll on - while this seems obvious, the current E-Class coupe and cabriolet are actually based on the previous-generation C-Class.

What this means is that high-performance AMG versions are almost certain to join the line-up at some point, something the current models lack.

Engine choices are likely to mirror the range offered in the sedan and wagon range, including a 135kW/300Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol (E200), 143kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbo-diesel (E220d), 180kW/370Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol (E300), 190kW/620Nm 3.0-litre turbo-diesel (E350d) and the 245kW/480Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol (E400).

All engines will be mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

However, being a convertible Mercedes-Benz may choose to limit the number of diesel-powered variants as open-top motoring isn’t as enjoyable with a clattery soundtrack.

Topping both the coupe and cabriolet ranges will be the all-out AMG E63 performance flagship.

While the sedan and wagons are still yet to be revealed, a leaked brochure from Russia indicated the E63 will produce 420kW/750Nm from the company’s new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, while the hotter E63 S will have outputs of 450kW and 850Nm.

In ‘standard guise’, the E63 sedan should dash from 0-100km/h in just 3.7 seconds, while the ‘S’-badged version will be capable of a supercar-beating 3.5-second sprint.

Expect the coupe to claim similar if not identical times, with the cabriolet to be 0.1 or 0.2 seconds slower due to the slightly heavier weight of its folding roof and reinforced body to compensate for the open top.

Also expected is an AMG E43 variant which will sit between the E400 and AMG E63, powered by a 295kW/520Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, which, in sedan guise propels the E-Class from 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds.

With the E-Class coupe likely to debut by the end of the year - possibly at the Paris motor show next month - the cabriolet should break cover sometime early next year.

A likely venue for the cabriolet’s debut is next year's Geneva motor show, which will take place in March 2017. The C-Class Cabriolet was revealed at this year’s event.
