2017 Mazda 6 pricing and specs: Subtle tweaks and new G-Vectoring Control join range
Australian pricing and specifications have been released for the 2017 Mazda 6 range today - and, while you can read our 2017 Mazda 6 launch review for the full picture, it’s fair to say the changes made in this update are subtle.
Model grades and pricing for the revised range are listed below. There’s a 2.5-litre petrol engine, along with a 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine, with four trim grades for the petrol variant and three for the diesel range.
Outside, the rear-view mirrors have been redesigned (now auto-folding on the Touring model grades and above), and there’s a compact shark-fin antenna for the wagon and LED lighting at the rear of all models.
Eight colour choices are available, including the 'Machine Grey Metallic' that debuted with the new CX-9. That sits along 'Soul Red Metallic' as a $250 option.
Inside, the changes are both more extensive, and more noticeable. Mazda says that further refinement makes the 6 interior more elegant and improves functionality, too. There’s a new steering wheel design, full colour ‘Active Driving Display’, enhanced driving position memory, rear centre armrest redesign for GT and Atenza, DAB+ radio, heated rear seats for GT and Atenza and a front seat back pocket update.
The Atenza model grade gets a premium interior package including: Nappa leather seats with titanium coloured piping, new titanium trim, black headlining with overhead console LED lighting and chrome-plated seat adjustment controls and glovebox latch.
Technology hasn’t been left without a tweak either with two important additions to the 6 range. The first is an improvement to Mazda’s Smart City Brake Support system. It now recognises pedestrians, with an expanded detection range, wider viewing angle, increased upper speed operation and deceleration performance has been enhanced.
GT and Atenza models also get Traffic Sign Recognition as part of this system. The speed limit is displayed inside the head-up display window.
Secondly, the 6 now gets Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control, which we sampled recently at Laguna Seca Raceway in California under the skin of the Mazda 3. G-Vectoring is a subtle – in fact imperceptible – series of throttle inputs that are aimed at altering the balance of the car, especially in corners, to keep it more stable and therefore ask less steering correction of the driver.
The system also works at the straight ahead position on the freeway, reducing corrections you’d usually dial in to match the line markings you’re following.
Inside the cabin, there’s the same premium feel across the range, while new acoustic glass for the front doors (GT and Atenza grades) brings an enhanced level of refinement to the drive experience.
