Electra Meccanica Solo revealed

Canadian company Electra Meccanica has unveiled its Solo single-seater, three-wheeled electric vehicle (EV) during the Luxury and Supercar Weekend in Vancouver.

Priced from CAD$19,888 ($20,197), the Electra Meccanica Solo is one of the most affordable EVs on sale, though it still packs enough punch and practicality for daily use - for one person.

In terms of size, the Solo is 3.04m long, 1.28m tall and 1.21m wide, making it 48.3cm shorter than a Fiat 500, but around 35.5cm longer than the new Smart ForTwo (not sold here).

Powering the Solo is a 61kW/190Nm AC synchronous electric motor, fuelled by a 16.1kWh lithium ion battery pack.

The 0-100km/h run is claimed at eight seconds, on its way to a limited top speed of 130km/h - though the company quotes a 220km/h capability.

Charging takes three hours using 220V and six hours on 110V, which gives a zero-emissions range of up to 160 kilometres.

Outside, the Solo comes equipped with halogen headlights, daytime-running lights and heated side mirrors, riding on 15-inch alloy wheels with disc brakes all round.

It’s also available in four colours; Raven Black, Arctic White, Titanium Silver and Electric Red.

Inside, the Solo features an LCD digital instrument cluster, keyless entry, power windows, AM/FM stereo with bluetooth/CD/USB and a rear-view camera.

Air-conditioning is optional, while airbags are not available - although it is clear the steering wheel is not equipped.

A 285-litre boot is more than enough for a few bags and some shopping - larger than physically larger micro cars like the Suzuki Celerio (254L), Mitsubishi Mirage (235L) and Kia Picanto (200L) - however those cars offer five seats as opposed to the Solo's one.

It’s unlikely we’ll see the Solo here anytime soon, blocked by the same laws that keep Renault's Twizy from local roads - but it certainly looks very funky.
