2017 Volvo V90 Cross Country teased, here in 2017 – video

The 2017 Volvo V90 Cross Country has been teased this week in an image and a short video, giving a first glimpse at what the jacked-up wagon will look like.

A teaser image tweeted this week shows the car under a sheet near a lake, with only the car’s profile and LED head- and tail-light signatures visible.

In the video, the car’s face is partially revealed, showing the V90 Cross Country’s tougher front bumper, revised grille - which uses a dot pattern rather than the standard car’s vertical slats - and beefier bumpers.

The narrator says that with the all-new model, the “all-new chassis technology, Cross Country is about to be reborn”.

Few other details have been released. The only other clues have been provided by a heavily-disguised prototype spied in June.

Like the V70 Cross Country and XC70 before it, the V90 Cross Country will likely be a raised station wagon with tougher plastic cladding on the bumpers, skirts and wheel arches, front and rear skid plates and all-wheel drive.

When it goes on sale - likely sometime next year - the V90 Cross Country will square off against the Audi A6 Allroad and the upcoming Mercedes-Benz E-Class All Terrain, along with cheaper alternatives in the Subaru Outback and Volkswagen Passat Alltrack.

Powering the V90 Cross Country will likely be the same range powering the S90/V90/XC90, which includes a 235kW/400Nm 2.0-litre twin-charged four-cylinder ‘T6’ petrol and the 173kW/480Nm four-cylinder ‘D5’ turbo-diesel.

Other powertrain options include a 180kW/350Nm twin-charged 'T5' petrol and the flagship 300kW/650Nm T8 hybrid which employs a 2.0-litre twin-charged petrol driving the front wheels and an electric motor on the rear axle.

While Volvo has been tight-lipped about when it plans on revealing the new off-road-capable wagon, it’s a logical assumption that the V90 Cross Country will be revealed at the Paris motor show next month.

Greg Bosnich, corporate director for Volvo Car Australia, told CarAdvice that the V90 Cross Country is expected locally in the first half of 2017, with more details on the car expected over the next few days.
