2011-2015 Mazda BT-50 recalled for rear seat fix:: 33,000 vehicles affected – UPDATE

Update - Mazda Australia has confirmed the number vehicles affected by this recall. See article for details

Mazda has issued a recall for 33,655 of its BT-50 dual cab utes sold between 2011 and 2015 over concerns the rear seatbacks could unlock when braking.

The manufacturer reports the end of the return spring for the rear folding seat back latch could break, causing the mechanism to malfunction.

If the fault occurs, the seat could make abnormal noises, while the seatback may not be locked in the upright position, causing it to fall forward and down when under brakes.

Mazda says if a child-restraint system is installed on the rear seat facing rearward, the correct clearance between the child-restraint system and the seat back will not be maintained if the rear seatback moves - which could result in the system not performing as required.

This also increases the risk of injury to rear seat passengers in the event of a collision.

Affected BT-50 utes were sold from 19 September 2011 to 17 December 2015. The VIN list for the recalled utes can be viewed here.

Owners of the affected vehicles will be contacted by Mazda Australia via mail, and will be advised to present their ute to their local dealer for replacement of the rear seat back latch assembly at no charge.

This is the second recall issued by Mazda this week, after it recalled a number of its popular 3 hatch, 6 wagon, CX-3 and CX-5 SUVs over concerns the tailgate struts could break due to corrosion.
