2017 Mini Countryman spied with less camouflage

The second-generation Mini Countryman has been spied in Germany ahead of its debut, most likely at the Paris motor show at the end of the month.

These latest photos show a prototype wearing a little less camouflage than the development vehicle spotted in the snow in January, and the John Cooper Works model spied in April.

It's been clear for a while, that the second-generation crossover will continue to slowly evolve the brand's corporate look. Compared to today's car, the new Countryman will be significantly larger, with reports indicating a growth in length of around 300mm to roughly 4.4 metres.

Under the skin, the new Countryman rides on a version the front- and all-wheel drive UKL platform already employed by various Mini models, as well as the BMW X1 and 2 Series Active Tourer.

Motivation will come from a selection of turbocharged three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines already used throughout the latest Mini and BMW lineups.

A report in June stated that the Countryman range will eventually include a plug-in hybrid model, to be known as the Countryman E, that will have its front wheels powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine and a 15kW/150Nm electric motor.

The rear axle will reportedly feature an 65kW/165Nm electric motor. With the E's 7.7kWh lithium-ion battery pack fully charged, the plug-in SUV will have an electric driving range of 38 kilometres.
