2017 Toyota RAV4 pricing and specs: More equipment and safety for updated SUV – UPDATE

Local pricing and specifications for the updated 2017 Toyota RAV4 range have been revealed, bringing extra safety and personalisation options for the long-running nameplate, along with boosted equipment levels.

Headlining the new model-year update is the availability of autonomous emergency braking (AEB) on automatic GX models as part of the optional safety pack - Toyota isn't offering it on the manual GX variants due to the 97/3 per cent sales split between automatic/manual for the entry-level RAV4.

Meanwhile, the safety pack remains optional on the mid-grade GXL and standard on the top-spec Cruiser variant.

Also included in the safety pack is forward collision warning, active cruise control, automatic high beam, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic wipers, front parking sensors and a trailer sway warning system.

When equipped to the GX variant, the safety pack also adds satellite navigation, 4.2-inch TFT driver information display, upgraded instrument cluster, DAB+ digital radio, automatic headlights, fog lights, and a revised front bumper.

All of that kit comes in at an extra $3800 over the base price of the automatic GX models.

The GXL grade also sees the addition of satellite navigation as standard, which brings Toyota Link app connectivity along with DAB+ digital radio.

For an extra $2500, the GXL can be had with the safety pack that adds the safety features seen in the GX’s optional package.

New for 2017 is the optional contrasting paint finish ($1000) on petrol GXL models, which adds silver highlights on the front and rear bumpers, along with the wheel arches, door sills and side mirrors. In conjunction with the silver finishes, black trim adorns the headliner and pillars.

The top-spec Cruiser model also sees some extra equipment as part of the update, with ambient footwell lighting and two-position memory function for the driver’s seat now fitted as standard.

Engines and transmissions remain unchanged for the new year, with buyers offered the choice of a 107kW/187Nm 2.0-litre petrol, 132kW/233Nm 2.4-litre petrol and a 110kW/340Nm 2.2-litre turbo diesel.

GX models equipped with the 2.0-litre petrol engine and a front-wheel drive configuration come with either a six-speed manual or a continuously-variable transmission (CVT), while 2.5-litre petrol AWD models come standard with a six-speed automatic.

The 2.2-litre diesel AWD version of the GX is likewise offered with the choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic, while GXL and Cruiser are auto-only.

For 2017, the GXL manual models have been dropped from the line-up, with Toyota citing low volume, reserving the three-pedal shifter for the 2.0-litre petrol 2WD and 2.2-litre diesel AWD GX variants.

It's also unlikely we'll see the new 85kW/185Nm 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine from the upcoming C-HR baby SUV anytime soon, with Stephen Coughlan - public relations manager for Toyota Australia - telling CarAdvice the company has no plans for a broader roll out of the new powerplant.
