2017 Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid unveiled, Australian order books open

The 2017 Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid has been revealed ahead of its public debut at the Paris motor show next month, serving as the new entry point into the range.

Starting at $242,600 plus on-road costs, the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid is over $60,000 cheaper than the twin-turbo V6 Panamera 4S revealed in June.

Porsche’s new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) teams a 243kW/450Nm 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine with a 100kW/400Nm electric motor, making for combined outputs of 340kW and 700Nm. Shifting gears is an eight-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission.

With this combination, the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid is capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 278km/h.

Along with its performance potential, the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid has an electric-only range of 50 kilometres and claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 2.5L/100km on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

The 400Nm of the electric motor is available as soon as the driver touches the accelerator pedal, as opposed to its predecessor which required at least 80 per cent throttle input for the electric assistance to cut in.

Feeding the electric motor is a 14.1kWh lithium-ion battery stored under the boot floor, which is up on the 9.4kWh pack of its predecessor - though the new unit weighs the same.

Charging takes 5.8 hours using a 230-V, 10-A connection, though if optioned with the 7.2kW on-board charger and 230-V, 32-A connection over the standard 3.6kW charger the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid’s battery can be fully charged in 3.6 hours.

Inside, the new Panamera PHEV features the Porsche Advanced Cockpit design shared with the rest of the Panamera range, though it comes with hybrid-specific displays and functions.

Sitting on each side of the analogue rev counter are seven-inch screens, one being a hybrid power meter. The large 12.3 inch Porsche Connect touchscreen infotainment system also offers access to hybrid-specific vehicle information.

Other features include extra hybrid-specific driving modes as part of the Sport Chrono Package - which is fitted as standard to the Panamera E-Hybrid.

Sport and Sport Plus mode are carried over from other Panamera models equipped with the package, while the E-Hybrid adds exclusive E-Power, Hybrid Auto, E-Hold and E-Charge modes.

The Panamera 4 E-Hybrid always starts in pure-electric E-Power mode. Selecting the new Hybrid Auto mode changes and combines both power sources automatically to maximise efficiency.

E-Hold mode conserves the battery’s current state of charge, while E-Charge mode involves the petrol engine charging the battery during driving - to achieve this, the engine generates more power than required for driving.

In Sport mode, the petrol engine is active continuously and maintains a minimum level of battery charge to ensure there is sufficient electric boost reserve when needed.

Sport Plus takes this one step further and allows the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid to reach its top speed of 278km/h, constantly charging the battery so both power sources can be used continuously.

The Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid is available to order now with first deliveries expected in mid-2017.
